About Rising Fawn Gardens
Rising Fawn Gardens is a small family business that has been in operation since 2015. Through the years, vegetables, flowers, turmeric, ginger, blueberries, apples, and medicinal, culinary, and tea herbs have been grown. Also in operation is a retreat venue catering specifically to health, wellness, non-profit support, and land conservation.
Job Summary
This position is a seasonal job from April to November. The primary responsibility for this position is the Medicinal Garden, a haven for pollinators, a teaching garden, and a garden for harvesting fresh herbs for use. The approximate 50' x 50’ garden has established small trees and perennials and a rotation of annuals typically propagated from seed or purchased plants from local nurseries. Duties include garden design, propagating plants, planting, weeding and general maintenance. Keeping the garden tidy and safe for visitors is a priority as is creating an experience for guests that is multi sensory and memorable.
The Gardener may also be asked to lead scheduled walks through the Medicinal Garden. Being able to share general knowledge about the plants with garden visitors such as use cases, parts used for medicine and simple preparations will be helpful.
Throughout the gardens there are many herb production beds. While there is no plan to harvest and dehydrate the herbs this season, we may work as a team to maintain them for a u-pick harvest to herbalists or interested individuals
The Gardener may also be asked to help with creating flower arrangements for events and maintain the flower pots around the Retreat House.
This position is for 2 days a week. The days and hours are flexible, but an average of 10 to 16 hours per week is an estimate of the time required for the job depending on the time of year. Garden tours may be a part of the 10-16 hours during the week or as additional hours when part of a scheduled retreat experience.
Salary: $18 – $22 per hour negotiable depending on qualifications
Schedule: Part-time, 10-16 hours a week, varying with the season
Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Design, plan and implement the growing and ground preparation of the medicinal garden.
Oversee crop maintenance such as dividing plants, weeding, cultivating, and planting.
Maintain all records for the garden, capturing information of activity each season.
Manage and maintain equipment required for gardens, including cleanliness and care.
Manage assistants and seasonal workers by promoting a positive and motivating work environment while ensuring tasks are completed in a timely fashion.
Maintain required communications and recordkeeping.
Lead educational garden tours and/or seasonal workshops.
Communicate weekly and monthly ‘look ahead’ and ‘review’ reports to the owner.
Look for opportunities to add to or improve upon the farm’s maintenance and well-being of the land.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong verbal communication skills.
Able to lead a team to accomplish tasks.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Word or Google Docs proficiency for maintaining records and communication.
Able and motivated to stand, bend, squat, pull, and carry for long periods of time.
Flexible, patient, and detail-oriented.
Eager to learn new tasks, asks questions, and be open to receiving direction and feedback from management or consultants.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent, associates or bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
3 years proven experience in gardening and horticulture with a specific interest and/or experience in medicinal plants and garden planning.
